Watercolour and gouache live somewhere between painting and drawing in my hands. I use them en plein air — literally, in plain air — working in a sketchbook or on a board in my lap, perched on a hillside or cross-legged in the back of the car. Recording the landscape on paper has an immediacy entirely different from the processes I use in the studio. These aren’t studies for studio work; they’re their own thing, complete and entire.
